Divorce

Two things got my attention last week.

Firstly, the  use of Divorce Vouchers.    We spend so much money on eating and spending ourselves happy when 1-2 hours with a good family lawyer can really make a difference.   “Will I get maintenance?”, “What about the children?”, “Who will pay the school fees?”, “I should’ve got a pre-nup!”  If you have heard someone ask any of those questions, maybe they would appreciate a divorce voucher.

The second is the Divorce wish list.  Hooray, it’s a new life, it’s a new you, go celebrate!

A headline that got my attention this morning

‘Lesbian mother appeals court decision after daughter removed’

Martin Evans wrote an article in the Daily Telegraph today.

As a family solicitor dealing with children matters and residence orders, I know that sexual orientation is highly unlikely to be the sole reason for a child being removed from a parent’s care. The success or failure of lesbian or gay parenting depends on parenting skills not sexual orientation.  I know successful, happy and well balanced children of same sex couples. Martin’s headline could lead gay and lesbian parents to fear that they will lose their children because of their sexuality.  Fear not!

The court is concerned with parenting skills and whether the child’s interests are being met. It is irrelevant that the mother is a lesbian but headline grabbing.

It leads me to think how I would feel if the headline were ‘Indian mother appeals court decision after daughter removed’ – probably offended.
